When is the concentration of water not included in the calculation of equilibrium constant and why?
Okay, this is what i know:
When water is one of the reactants or products of a reaction that carries out in aqueous medium, it is not included in the calculation of the equilibrium constant,
BUT since the equilibrium constant of water is 10^-14
and the concentration of pure water is 55.6mol/dm3
which would make a significant difference whether or not you include it in, why is it excluded?
And why is it included again when you’re calculating the acid dissociation constant? Since the acid dissocation constant already contains the concentration of water?
Take the dissociation of water.
H2O = H+ + OH-
so
Keq = [H+][OH-]/[H2O]
we know the [H+]=[OH-]=1 x 10-7
so [H2O] = (55.6 – 1×10^-7) which still equals 55.6
In fact for all the kinds of equilibriums we deal with in Freshman chem, this is the case, so we just roll the water into the Keq
so Kw = Keq X 55.6
we really are just ignoring it because it stays constant
